Back to the Top for Boys’ Basketball

Team made second round of Western Mass. tournament under new coach Llewelyn

The Eagles run the floor.

Matt Llewelyn, this year’s varsity coach for the boy’s Franklin County Technical School

Eagles, had a pretty good rookie season as head coach.

The 2015-16 squad won their first league championship since 1986 with a 15-1 record in league play and were 18-6 overall. “

Probably the high point of the season was hosting the first round of the Western Mass Tournament,” said F.C.T.S Athletic Director Joe Gamache. “We were the number five seed and the win at home against Westfield Academy that carried us into the second round was pretty exciting.”

The Eagles also went all the way to the finals of the Massachusetts’ State Vocational Tournament, losing only at the end to Nashoba Valley Technical School in a tough, hard-fought contest.

“Overall, this team had a fantastic year,” said Gamache, who added, “They jelled quickly under the new head coach and, with some key individuals returning, we might see some pretty exciting things from them next year, too.”

This year’s team was characterized by their consistent team play from the beginning of the season right up until the end.

While it was the team effort that led to the successful season, there were some outstanding performers who deserve to be singled out. Seniors Zack Korpiewski and C.J. Daignault, this year’s winner of the most improved player award, both deserve mention for their leadership and on the court contributions. Junior Colin Gould, who was a huge factor in the success of this year’s team, will return for what could be a record breaking season. “Colin will be a key component in the 2016-17 team and we definitely have high hopes for them,” said Gamache.

Coach Llewelyn, who also coached the girls’ varsity team during the 2013-2015 seasons, could not be reached for comment, but it is the opinion of this reporter that he is definitely a “keeper.”
